Water is one of the biggest challenges facing the GCC countries. The per capita consumption of water in region is very high; residents of UAE consume 550 liters of water each day placing UAE as the third highest per capita consumer of water in the world after US and Canada. The region in general faces scarcity of water due to multiple factors including the arid climate.

The GCC countries, known to be the world’s richest in oil, are expected to face a serious water supply shortage in the coming years. A recent study conducted by Booz & Company highlights that factors such as rapidly increasing population, steady expansion of the economies, long summer season, and lack of awareness about rationalization of water consumption pose as a challenge for local governments.
